Oscars 2012: Predictions and Predilections

Yes, it’s time once again for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to convene and exercise their yearly bias. Really, how else would Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close get a Best Picture nomination?

Despite this, I do like the Oscars and generally look forward to them every year. Sure, it does mean sitting through a lot of unfunny bullshit (see: the entirety of last year’s show) and baseless pandering to teen demographics (in recent years, focusing on pseudo-celebrities like the cast of Twilight rather than the real, accomplished stars). But when the Academy gets it right (see: Hugh Jackman’s opening back in 2009), they get it very right, reminding us all why we love going to the movies.

As such, having seen a number of ceremonies over the years, I’d like to put out a list of my predictions for some of the major categories at this year’s awards. These aren’t necessarily the winners I’d like to see, but the ones I think will probably get the honors. I’ll post a follow-up article after the show hits to compare my list with the winners.
